To get your certificate please have all your work done and Blogged.
Then report upstairs to room 407 where you will present your BLOG to Dave and Brian for your mark of Credit, Credit with Distinction, or No Credit.

You should do the following things when you present your BLOG
1) Introduce your team
2) Talk individually about your architect
3) Talk about your model and bryce and where it is located and what it is for: describe it!
4) Show your favorite BLOG entries and say why
5) Talk about what mark you deserve and why.

The Skyscraper Museum is located at 39 Battery Place, New York, NY 10280. The Museum shares a building with the Ritz Carlton in Battery Park City, at the southwestern tip of Manhattan. Nearby landmarks include Bowling Green, Battery Park, and Castle Clinton.

HOURS
Museum hours are 12-6 PM, Wednesday-Sunday. General admission is $5, $2.50 for students and seniors.

SUBWAY: Take the 4 or 5 (Green Line) to Bowling Green. Walk west, toward the Hudson River, along the park-side of Battery Park. Follow the street around the bend and you'll come to the Museum's entrance, directly across the street from the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

SUBWAY: Take the 1 (Red Line) or the R/W (Yellow Line) to South Ferry (Whitehall Street). From the Ferry you can walk alongside Battery Park (on the park-side) directly to the Museum. When you see the Museum of Jewish Heritage, we're right across the street. Although it's a bit more difficult, you can also get off either line at the Rector Street station and follow the directions below.

SUBWAY: Take the 1 or R/W to Rector Street. Take Rector Street west (downhill) until you get to the West Side Highway. Here, make a left, and walk another block, crossing the intersection at the light for the Parking Garage and Tunnel Exit. Immediately after crossing this intersection, cross the Highway at the light. This will take you into Battery Park City, where the first north/south street will be Battery Place. You'll want to take a left (walk south) on Battery Place, and walk three blocks or so to the Museum's entrance, at 39 Battery Place, across the street from the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

BUS: The M9 and M20 Buses both stop yards from the Museum's doorstep. The M9 runs through the Lower East Side, down Water Street and around the base of the island to Battery Park City. The second stop in Battery Park City is the closest to the Museum (The bus passes the Museum and stops on the far corner, in front of a construction site) The M20 is the 7th Avenue bus, which will stop in front of the Museum of Jewish Heritage, directly across the street from the Museum. The M15 (2nd avenue) bus will take you to South Ferry (Whitehall street), at which point you can follow the South Ferry instructions, above.

Zaha Hadi is a very interesting and well known architect. She went from being an unknown student to ’’architecture’s new diva’’. She is a superstar and she is always on top of things and that’s one of the main reasons that she is the most famous female architect in the whole world. Zaha Hadi was born in Baghdad, Iraq in the year 1950 on October 31. She is a British citizen, an Arab, a Sunni Muslim, and an Iraqi bought up in pre-Saddam Baghdad. She was born in a rich and open family which means that she got to experience many things. As she was growing up her father opened her to many other different cultures. But he also taught her about her own heritage. Zaha Hadid first became interested in architecture when she was only eight years old. The way it happened was that a friend of her parents came to show them some designs for her aunts house. His designs quickly caught her eye and she quickly became interested in architecture. But before she started studying architecture she was interested in the field of modern mathematics, and the relationship between philosophy, physics and math. Her parents were aristocrats. Her father was a Baghdad industrialist and a leading politician. Even though Zaha Hadid was born in Iraq she thinks of herself as an Arab but considers herself a Londoner. Zaha Hadid says she enjoys to make people wait. She also jumps from task to task. I now it might seem a little sloppy but to her that’s just the middle eastern way.





Zaha Hadi went to a convent school. In that school there went French nuns, Iraqi nuns, and English nuns. There was also Muslim girls, Jewish girls, and Christian girls. Zaha Hadid says that as she was growing up that for five years she always crossed her heart. Until one day she realized that her parents never did that. So she asked them and they told that it was because they weren’t Christians. Zaha Hadid studied mathematics at the university in Beirut in the year 1968. She studied architecture at the Architectural Association from 1972 and was awarded the diploma prize in 1977. Hadid studied elementary school in England and in Switzerland. She learned more about different cultures. Zaha Hadid says that since she was taught the Christian way at school she felt really far apart and separated from her own heritage. Right after Zaha Hadid graduated she worked with her former teacher, Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas at the office for metropolitan architecture. Zaha Hadid is currently teaching at the university of applied arts Vienna in Austria.

Creative Project Day!
So you know where your Skyscraper will be and some ideas on what it should look like.

1) Write in your sketchbook: Where it is located. What is going to be used for. Influences for your style or design. What will you do with your public space? IE. fountains, sculptures, playground etc..

2) Graph your footprint of your building on the block.

3) Scale drawing of your skyscraper.

4) Bryce Model

We will be looking at Ground Zero today, not for the tragedy of the attack, but at the designs that architects put forward to rebuild.

First step in this paper is to pick an architect you are interested in and want to learn more about

the first page of the paper will be about the artist/architect's life before he was famous (or a working architect)

this includes but is not limited to the following:

Date of birth
Where he or she was born and where they grew up
what they were into growing up etc..
family background
mother and or fathers profession
(this should take up one full page)

the second part of the paper will consist of the following
schooling
early works
(this shall take up one page)



the third part of the paper will be consist of the following
architectural style
(possible people he or she worked for)--influences
early works
(should be one page)

the fourth part of the paper should be:
monumental works (about them--wiki them--facts etc)
(one page)


The last part of the paper should conists of one page of photos
(hopefully some are ones you took on our walks)
and one final drawing

OVERVIEW

In this two week class you will travel to many skyscraper sites around the city, take the ferry to Staten Island, travel to the Brooklyn Promenade, and visit Central Park. Along the way you will photograph your findings and take journal notes. When you get back to school you will create a blog of your travels. At school you will learn how to create computer architectural models and create a wood model of your own skyscraper design. This will be an amazing experience!

BATHROOMS

You may only use the bathroom on the basement floor next to the computer lab. NEVER NEVER NEVER leave the basement level because other school are taking regents.

COMPUTER AND WOODSHOP

We are being allowed to use the computer lab for this course. YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO USE PROGRAMS OR VISIT WEBSITES THAT YOU ARE INSTRUCTED TO USE. If you are caught on another site, using messenger programs, using music programs, using email, or any other site during class you will be dismissed from the class. No questions asked.

The computers should be treated with the highest level of respect. Do not alter any desktop imagery or use any control panels options. If you are found treating the computers in an irresponsible way you will be dismissed from the class.

We will be in the woodshop for a good portion of the class. You must behave in a professional way in the shop. That means no horseplay etc. The tools you will be using can be very dangerous if you are goofing around. If you cannot act in an appropriate manner in the shop you will be dismissed from the class.

Welcome to NDHS summer school! Being here is an opportunity to work hard to make up missed classtime or unsuccessful grades.

To get credit for the class you MUST:
Be here everyday!
One miss and you are dismissed from the class.

Be Ontime!
If you are 15 mintues late more than 3 times you are dismissed from the class.
If you are more than 15 minutes late anyday or afterlunch you are dismissed from the class.

Work Hard!
All class members must do the required blogs, field notes, creative project, architect report, and final presentation. If the work is not done for the day you will be dismissed from the class.

Be a Team Player!
You must walk with the group on field trips.
You must be respectful to adults.

Follow Directions!
We will be outside for most of the class. You may not go into any stores or leave the group for any reason.

You must listen for directions and take off headphones when we arrive at a site.

Phones will be confiscated for the day if they are used.

Remember, This class if for your benefit to help you pass or graduate. Don't mess it up. Failure to comply to any of the above leads to automatic dismissal.
